“Similar Networks, Different Movements: Comparing the LGBT Movement to Activism about Alternative Sexualities”

Keynote Address at the Alternative Sexualities Conference

Amy L. Stone, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology
Trinity University
San Antonio, TX

“There are many parallels between the LGBT movement and other types of activism about alternative sexualities, especially BDSM and polyamory. In its formative years the LGBT community used community institutions like bars and clubs to create social networks and fought similar medical and criminal pathologization. This talk will analyze these similar origins and highlight the dramatic differences in social and political power between the LGBT movement and activism to support BDSM and polyamory.”
Dr. Stone studies the intersection of gender, sexuality, and social movements.  Her previous works include Gay Rights at the Ballot Box. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press (2012). “Diversity, Dissent and Decision-making: The Challenge to LGBT Politics” GLQ 16:3, 465-472.  (2010) and “More Than Adding a T: American Lesbian and Gay Activists” Attitudes Towards Transgender Inclusion.” Sexualities. Volume 12, Issue 3, pp. 337-357. (2009).  She is currently working on projects examining BDSM/Kink social movements, in addition to her continuing projects on transgender inclusion in movement politics, and gender/sexuality in urban festivals, among others.
